Lines and Wrinkles

Botulinum toxin is an FDA approved medication that works by relaxing the muscles in the face that cause wrinkles. Botulinum toxin is frequently used for reducing fine lines on the forehead and around the eyes There are several other places that Botulinum toxin can also be placed to enhance aesthetic appearance. Although not a permanent solution for wrinkles, Botulinum toxin usually lasts from 3 to 4 months and can produce results that can be seen in as little as a few days.

Botulinum toxin has been used safely by physicians for over 20 years to treat patients with certain medical conditions such as eye spasms, central nervous system disorders and excessive muscle contractions. The more recent use of botulinum toxin to reduce wrinkles was discovered almost by accident. A dermatologist in Vancouver began using botulinum toxin to treat signs of aging in 1986 after his wife, an ophthalmologist, observed that her patients who were treated for eye spasms commented that the botulinum toxin had also improved the wrinkles between their eyebrows.
What are muscle relaxing injections?
A minute quantity of Botulinum Toxin A is injected into the muscles that cause these dynamic lines. The injection temporarily prevents nerve signals from reaching the muscle and as a result the muscle relaxes and the lines and wrinkles become smoother and less pronounced. This treatment is simple, effective and with minimal swelling or redness and have a proven track record for effectiveness. You would expect to see results in 4-7 days.
Possible Side Effects
Side effects, if they occur are usually temporary and mild to moderate, and are typically linked to the injections e.g. pain on injection, redness, swelling etc.
Occasionally a top up is required 2 weeks after injection. This can be discussed with your practitioner when you discuss your care at your review 2 weeks after therapy. Rarely with repeated treatments, tolerance can develop and the botulinum works less well. One of the rare, but important unwanted effects can be increased heaviness of the upper eyelids; known as ptosis.
What is involved?
Following a free consultation with our Aesthetic Nurse practitioner you will be assessed and advised of the most suitable treatment for you. Treatment can take as little as 20 minutes and you will be able to return to normal activities immediately afterwards. The smoothing effects of the first treatment typically last for up to 3-4 months. You will need to return for regular 3 monthly treatments during the first year as the optimum results are obtained if the next treatment is performed before the effects of the previous treatment has worn off. With repeated treatments the relaxed and softened effects will last longer. You will be given a list of post procedure instructions which will help you get the full benefits of your treatment.
